What can a dietitian do for me?
Registered dietitians are THE Nutrition Experts. They carry the credential “RD” meaning that they have had rigorous training in the area of foods and nutrition, have passed a national exam and have stayed current on nutrition research through continuing education. If you need to lose weight, lower your cholesterol, control your diabetes, or want to eat a healthier diet, an RD can help you with developing an eating plan that is right for you.

A registered dietitian may also help you save on future health care costs by avoiding expensive drugs, medical equipment and complications from diseases and chronic health conditions.

To find a dietitian in your area, contact the American Dietetic Association hotline at 800/366-1655 between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm (C.S.T.) or visit the ADA website: www.eatright.org

Do I need a vitamin-mineral supplement?
Supplements cannot take the place of a healthy diet. If you are skipping meals, eliminating certain food groups such as fruits and vegetables, or have a health condition, you may need a nutrition check-up. A registered dietitian can assess your diet and help you set nutritional goals that meet your individual needs.

To find a dietitian in your area, contact the American Dietetic Association hotline at 800/366-1655 between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm (C.S.T.) or visit the ADA website: www.eatright.org

I don’t have time to eat right. What can I do?
Time is a major factor when deciding what to eat so it’s easy to head for the nearest fast food restaurant or convenience store. Many restaurants and convenience stores, however, do offer healthier choices, and grocery stores now carry many healthy foods in convenience packaging so eating well doesn’t have to be time consuming. For example, instead of fries with your burger, have a side salad with light dressing. When stopping for a drink, choose milk instead of pop. For snacks, eat fruit or nuts instead of candy or chips.

Don’t forget about breakfast to start your day. A small bagel or English muffin with peanut butter is easy to eat on the run.

For other quick meal and snack ideas, visit the ADA website at www.eatright.org or check with your local County Extension Office. Top
