What Is A Dietitian?

DIETITIANS ARE THE NUTRITION EXPERTS. In Kansas, look for the initials R.D. (registered dietitian) and L.D. (licensed dietitian) behind a person's name to assure you a level of care that is credible and practical. The State of Kansas licenses dietitians to ensure that an individual has:

    · a degree from an accredited university
    · nearly 1000 hours of supervised training
    · passed a national exam
    · completed yearly continuing education.

In Kansas, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without meeting education or training standards. In deciding if a person using the title "nutritionist" is credible, use caution. Advice is usually not trustworthy from people who:

    · use words like "miraculous", "breakthrough" or "magic"
    · want to sell you costly diet pills or other cure-alls
    · rely on testimonials, before-and-after photos or undocumented case histories
    · have false or flimsy credentials.
