Nutrition Education for the Public 2010 FNCE Activities

NEP’s Practice Group Spotlight Session, "Will New WIC Food Package Changes Bring Long-Term Health Benefits?" will be held Tuesday, November 9, 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. Speakers include Kevin Concannon, Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, United States Department of Agriculture, and Debra Whitford, Director of the Supplemental Food Programs Division, Food and Nutrition Service, United States Department of Agriculture.

Under Secretary Concannon and Whitford will detail how improved diets impact birth outcomes, growth, development and long term health. They will also discuss how the benefits of good health can be linked to reducing the prevalence of inadequate and excessive nutrient intakes. Attendees will benefit from understanding how the changes to the WIC food packages hold potential for improving the nutrition and health of the nation's low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants & young children.

Nutrition Education for the Public and Women's Health & Medical Nutrition Practice Groups’ Networking Breakfast will be held Sunday, November 7, 2010, 7:30-9:30 a.m., at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel.

NEP Announces Award of Excellence Winner
The 2010 recipient of the NEP Award of Excellence is the Pennsylvania State University’s program "Food Related Intergenerational Discussion Group Experiences (FRIDGE).” FRIDGE is an excellent example of a program that has been developed from the research base. The program helps family members of different generations to enhance their communication about food, learn more about food and nutrition, and improve family eating habits through teamwork.
